You remember those winter days spent ice-skating, slipping and sliding around, or defending yourself from your siblings’ menacing snowballs, then being called inside with wet feet and bright red cheeks? It was only ever Mom’s warming hot chocolate that could tear you away from the fun!

Just because the games have now given way to shovelling, for you, doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself to that same old chocolatey goodness! Winter has well and truly set in and that means that age flies out the window when there’s a nice big mug of comforting cocoa on the table!

So here are 3 elaborate hot chocolate recipes to bring your childhood favorite to new realms of deliciousness.

 

HOT CHOCOLATE WITH AN ORANGE TWIST

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 56g milk or dark chocolate
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • Toppings: whipped cream, orange zest, chocolate shavings

SPICED HOT CHOCOLATE

  • 1 cup milk
  • 56g de chocolat au lait ou noir
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch cayenne or chilli pepper
  • Toppings: Whipped cream, chocolate shavings, cayenne pepper powder, cinnamon stick, ground cinnamon, marshmallows, coconut shavings

CARAMEL HOT CHOCOLATE

  • 1 cup milk
  • 56g milk or dark chocolate
  • 1/3 cup coffee cream
  • 1 tsp caramel sauce
  • Toppings: Whipped cream, caramel sauce, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, butterscotch chocolate chips, fleur de sel

BASE METHOD

 

  1. Put the broken-up chocolate into a saucepan on medium-high heat.
  2. Add the milk and mix until the chocolate has melted and the two liquids are totally mixed together, for about 5 minutes.
  3. Mix the other ingredients in.
  4. Serve in a cup and add toppings of your choice.
